countdown to holidays.

happy birthday to justin and vincent!

you know how nutritionists say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day?
well, i always wonder...what exactly IS breakfast?
i mean, i know its like the first meal of the day, but if we stick to that definition then no one will ever actually skip breakfast unless they don't eat for that 24-hour period.
what i mean is... let's say i wake up at 10am and i eat weetbix at 1pm purely because i wasn't hungry until then. is that considered breakfast or lunch? it's the first meal of the day, it's a typical breakfast meal, but it was eaten 3 hours after i woke up. at this point in time, is it too late for me to consider that as breakfast? is it now my lunch?

because they always say that breakfast boosts the metabolism.
does that mean that once my metabolism is awake i should eat so that it gets boosted?
i'm really confuzzled here, help me out.

anyway i'm really frustrated with the refs in soccer. i mean, come on, we all saw the germany and england game, or at least the highlights. that was so clear. my mums been complaining that they should get younger refs because 1. the old ones cant keep up with the players, 2. they have bad eyesight, 3. they cant multitask as well.

but okay, the ref couldnt call it a goal if he didnt see it. so we should get video ref next time right? wrong. the fifa dudes are not thinking about video reffing even though there have been SO MANY bad calls in this world cup. i saw one article that said they MIGHT consider it after the finals. geez, a bit late for that yeh?

speaking of soccer, theres this octopus, Octopus Paul, who predicts the winners for each game. hes german and wat happens is they have two jars of mussel in his tank, each with a flag and the jar that paul goes to means that that country wins. well his success rate is 80% (from some 2008 championship) and hes predicted all of germany's games correctly. his latest prediction: win over argentina. hahahaha id relli like to see that.

this site said that the octopus took about an hour to make his decision, meaning that the game might actually end up with a penalty shootout. seriously, i am SO watching that match.

but im not superstitious and still think argentina will win =P
seriously, read the article. very very interesting

genius #17: prisoners and hats puzzle
this is quite old but i just love it.

basically, there are four prisoners about to be executed. but the judge wants to give them a little puzzle:
they are all buried in sand up to their necks in a straight line and can only see ahead of them.
the fourth and last prisoner is infront of a wall that separates him from the other three and as a result he can see no-one and no-one can see him. each prisoner is given a hat to wear, but they cannot see the colour of their hat. there are two white hats and two black hats.

to get out of execution, just one person needs to say the colour of their hat. if he says it wrong, they are all executed. if he says it right, they are all set free. they are not allowed to discuss it among themselves. the first word to be said will be taken as the answer.

who is the one to answer, and how did he logic it out?

note: there are two answers; one easy, one hard.

let me know in the cbox and i shall tell you the answer in the next post (no cheating or spoiling it if you already know the answer!)

diagram to help you, but jumble the colours up a bit (what if its black, white, white, black?)

Thursday 24 June 2010

btw, who's going 40th anniversary?

haha so i forgot about this for a while BUT
two weeks ago, i think, pamela had this sonnet due in her english class and THE PERIOD BEFORE she realises that it's due. so then I, being the loving-poetry-writing girl that i am, was like "I'LL DO IT FOR YOU!!"
so then she's like, "OKAY!"
and the theme was an issue. so i was like, "hmmm...what issue can i do?"
and pamela is like, "you're so happy chappy... your issue should be... SAD PEOPLE"

so here is my sonnet on pessimism (it's quite the dodgy and therefore hilarious):
I look onto the million eyes,
each accessorised with a mournful frown.
I cringe at the woeful cries
lost in skies of gray and brown.
So sad, so shy, so pitiful;
whosoever could be so cruel
to inflict the pain and tears
into children with too many fears,
too many worries that anger me?
"Why is the world so bad,"
I ask, "Why so unhappy?"
I glare upon them, so mad,
so drowned in fury,
for they have just lost what happiness they had.

ahaha. hilarity.

speaking of poetry, because all songs are poems, i've been in.love. with the gorillaz lately. i mean, we all go through our phases, but seriously i love the gorillaz. in english last friday i was reading cloud atlas and for some reason the line "up on melancholy hill, there's a plastic tree" just went on repeat for me.
it was so annoying that i didn't know the rest of the words!
so i went home, listened to it, listened to it, and listened to it. and now. i got the words NAILED.
seriously i love the gorillaz but their first album was awesum. (FEEL GOOD INC FTW- haha i actually know the entire song, including the rap!)
but yes, i remember when my bro first showed me the song, he fully analysed it. ==

yeh, he was like "maybe the plastic tree is symbolic of our plastic society; you know, plastic surgery etc and its a melancholy hill because everyone's sad"
haha but now that i think of it. yeh that's quite true. and the fact that the plastic tree is on top of the melancholy hill means that our society is basically worshiping or looking up to superficial values and the like.

anyway i dont want to go too nerdy on you...

lol on wednesday i had my braces appointment, and i went in completely unexpected of anything. i mean the past....6 months i think hes just been changing my coloured elastic things and not doing anything to the wire. but THIS TIME. because some of my teeth are still a teeeeeeny bit behind the others, he took out the wire and bent it a bit so that those aforementioned teeth will come out a bit more.

and while he took the wire out, i must say my teeth felt VERY VERY weird. like... naked. and bare. and relli spaced out. and if i pushed my tongue against them i thought they were going to break. he puts the wire back in and has to screw drive it in or sumthing (like he always does) but this time he pressed SO hard against my teeth i thought they were going to collapse into my throat. then he finished and my teeth were SO SORE. worst of all its my FRONT teeth so i can't eat anything that has any sort of texture watsoever. bread hurts. bananas hurt. grapes with seeds are just nightmares. and dont even talk about chattering your teeth together for the fun of it.

it sucks. its like he just put the braces on for the first time again. gahhhhh. had to eat porridge today.

speaking of textures...

genius #16: foam, shaving gel, hair mousse
i've ALWAYS loved foam. i mean... BUBBLES inside a liquid or solid. foams are emulsions (such an awesum word), and i LOVE emulsions. seriously. foam... when dish washing liquid comes into contact with running water, oh golly. when egg whites are whisked to stiff peaks, omgsh. when my brother showed me his shaving gel, and how it comes out to his finger as gel, but when rubbed MAGICALLY TURNS INTO FOAM, i was like going beserk. when i use hair mousse, i just cant get over it. i LOVE foam.

one of the main reasons i want to make coffee is because of the foaming milk. it looks like SO much fun. not to mention the coffee art but thats a different topic altogether.

arghhhhhhhhh. foam-gasm.

you know what really bugs me?

1. (still continuing from the last post), people will watch the video or see the posters, feel sad for her, and then carry on like usual. i mean seriously, this isn't gonna stop someone from drinking and getting drunk. once they're drunk, they have no control over themselves and they wouldn't even know what they're doing. it's relli sad. i think for someone to finally learn their lesson is for them to experience it first hand. *sigh* what has the world come to?

2. the stupid refs. wat is WRONG with them. i reckon they're totally biased against australia. seriously, first game red card cahill now second game red card kewell!! that is NOT a coincidence. they didn't even do anything wrong! as if that hand ball even LOOKED deliberate. gahhhh makes me so angry. and that ghana dude totally should've gotten red carded but noooooo give him a yellow card cuz you hate australia. geez.
and who saw that match between germany and serbia? that ref was soooo retarded. how many yellow cards did he give! gosh, for no reason at all. that was retarded.

anyway, so i guess now we have to wait for thursday morning at 4:30 am to see whether ghana beats germany AND australia beats serbia. which is really stupid because we're relying on TWO UPSETS. basically, we're hoping for a miracle. should i waste my precious sleep and watch that match? what are you guys gonna do?

OH i started reading cloud atlas last...wednesday i think.
i tried reading it at the start(ish) of the year...after i finished the book thief... and i gave up after a few pages just because it was soooo boring and the language was so hard to follow. and now... not even a week later and i'm up to the third part of the book.

okay, so how this book goes is that there are six different stories, all different from each other and in a different sort of time period. the first is in the 19th century and the sixth is in the post-apocalyptic future. the structure for the book goes parts: 1,2,3,4,5,6,5,4,3,2,1. they are all quite different to each other (i'm guessing) and so far each part has been written in a different style, however they are all connected to each other in some sort of way. right now it looks like a relli cheap way of connecting them, but my bro assures me that later on in the book (and if i check with wiki) that there will be a deeper connection to these stories.

but yeh. quite interesting. it's amazing how the author has changed his tone and structure for these six different parts. i can't believe i've read so much in the past two days. i think once you get past the first part it's really easy and interesting to read. =]

genius #15: chaos theory (the butterfly effect)
From wiki:
small differences in the initial condition of a dynamical system may produce large variations in the long term behavior of the system...The butterfly effect is a common trope in fiction when presenting scenarios involving time travel and with "what if" scenarios where one storyline diverges at the moment of a seemingly minor event resulting in two significantly different outcomes.

and you know how much i love time travel.
it's called the butterfly effect because of the first thought: "Does the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas?"
The phrase refers to the idea that a butterfly's wings might create tiny changes in the atmosphere that may ultimately alter the path of a tornado or delay, accelerate or even prevent the occurrence of a tornado in a certain location.

i find that an AWESOME theory. i remember they made a reference to it in one of the lilo and stitch episodes and i was like WOW it's the butterfly effect (yeh, don't ask me why i knew of this theory when i was like in year 5/6)

this kinda relates to that jacqui chick and her being hit by the drunk driver. if she didn't go to that birthday party she was attending and didn't get hit by that driver, then maybe she would be perfectly fine, but then again maybe someone wouldn't have seen the drink-driving campaigns, gone out, gotten themselves drunk, and maybe it would've happened anyway?

or like those chain mails you get where they say some guy got stuck in the traffic on the way to work, or maybe had to go back in to their house to get a wallet, and because of that they avoided the 9/11 attacks?

seriously i find this amazing because now i wonder what could have been if tiny stuff did/n't happen to me?

like that how i met your mother ep when ted goes left instead of right, cuts across the street to the beggar, spends a minute at the magazine stand and then ends up bumping into stella, which causes him to meet the chick who will be his wife. and he does those things because of past events that he wouldn't have thought would be of anymore importance. but it turns out it was a crazy part of his life.

anyway, too much ranting from me, but yeh. i love these crazy theories.

i'm so in love with the butterfly effect, last year for major work i kinda based my story on this concept and titled it the butterfly effect.

Friday 18 June 2010

you don't know what you got 'till it's gone.

*looks at title*
you got that right, it's that time again... my regular moment of deepness!

so in pd, our student teacher showed us this vid of a chick who was in a car crash and suffered third degree burns. it was so bad she had to get so many skin grafts and at the end of it she didn't even look human! she had no hair, no ears, and no nose. one eye was sewn shut, the other barely open, her skin pale and unhealthy, and her mouth disfigured, not to mention her entire face. fingers on both hands were amputated.

the sad thing is that a drunk driver crashed into her. it wasn't even her fault. and she was so pretty. her life was just destroyed in that one night.

i mean, when i was watching it... i just couldn't believe it.
like. argh.
everything's so screwed up and unfair in this world!

it's times like these where i just LOVE everything in my life as it is. seriously, i feel so guilty for looking at things in such bad lighting. as you all probably know, i'm very judgmental and critical of even the tiniest details. and now i just feel retarded for doing that. and it's relli sad that, i say this now, but i KNOW that if you give me a week or two i will just go back to being wat/how i was before.

it always happens.

but this, i think i will seriously keep remembering this at random times for the entirety of my life! and it's so sad that we live in such an awesum world, but nobody notices it. we take things for granted sooooo much. a simple car ride, we get angry at the traffic lights, the speed limits, the signs, the bad asian drivers (im joking, i hate stereotypes), but we never realise that we were so lucky.

no fines, no flat tires, no DRUNK DRIVERS CRASHING IN TO YOU.

and yes, that old adage, you don't know what you got 'till it's gone.

ever seen those people in hospital or those who go through divorces/marriages or those who have their homes repossessed. more examples: people who cheat on their other half, people who just lost a loved one, anything like that.

i reckon most of those people didn't know what they had until they lost it. they took for granted their husband/wife, job, house, family, etc. once it's gone, it's hard to get back, if you can even get it back in the first place.

we are just about the worst generation there is: we are spoilt and we haven't done anything, been through anything to earn what we have received.

to sum it up, because i think this post is crazy long, and insanely pessimistic, let's all try to be just a tad more grateful of what we have. try not to take things for granted. we have awesum lives. let's not forget that. no matter what position you're in, there's always someone much, much worse than you. and the sad thing is, they're probably the ones that don't deserve it.

"If a person stumbles, he must pick himself up and keep going. I believe this is very important; if not, life would not have much sense."

- Jacqui Saburido
(the chick that was in the accident- google her, but i'm warning you, it's very very frightening)

formal dresssss

oh wow. that last post was the 100th post! =O madness.
too bad i didn't realise.

BEFORE I FORGET-
you know those world cup glasses? okay i got everything except pink, but i have a spare blue. so if anyone has a spare pink and wants blue, pleaseeee trade. i have ocd i must have all colours.

anywai, on monday (don't you just love public holidays) my mum and i went to eastwood and i bought a formal dress!!
i know, i know, relli early don't you think? but i relli liked it and it was on sale and i tried it on and i got paranoid (what if the next time i come here its sold out? then i'd NEVER forgive myself!)

but yeh. i need to alter it at the waist and the straps are a bit long. and then it'll look awesum. =] so now i just need to get some heels and i'm all set to go. XD

yes, it looks better when its worn. annnnd don't forget i need to alter the waist in a bit so yeh. lol

except i'm gonna wait for some time before i alter it, just incase i gain or lose weight and then i have to go back and alter it againnnnnn that'll be so gay.

and i was so in love with the dresses in the shop, i tried on some others that were noice.
one was like gray/silvery and it was a relli nice fit except the straps looked relli weird because they were like curvy kinda and then it made it appear like my fat was bulging out. and also it was a bit tight in that general area.

then i tried on another, and i fell in love with it. it could be like evening AND casual wear. its so pretty and fits me perfectly.

once again, it looks better when worn =P
sorry the pictures make the dresses look relli relli messy and stuff but i'll probably take a picture of me in the dress when its altered (so like november ish)

genius #14: popcorn
despite me hating anything to do with microwaves, i seriously find popcorn so genius.
seriously. from something so innocent and tiny like this:

like wattheheck. thats insane.

so crazy.

and i aboslutely adore kernels (the shop), seriously its like amazing. so many awesum flavours. i looooooooove macho nacho!!! and creamy creamy caramel!! argh there's so many that are just awesum!

from wiki:

Popcorn was first discovered thousands of years ago by the Native Americans. Some tribes believed that the popping noise was that of an angry god who escaped the kernel. The English who came to America in the 16th and 17th centuries learned about popcorn from the Native Americans.

During the Great Depression, popcorn was comparatively cheap at 5-10 cents a bag and became popular. Thus, while other businesses failed, the popcorn business thrived and became a source of income for some struggling farmers. During World War II, sugar rations diminished candy production, causing Americans to eat three times more popcorn than they had before.

Friday 11 June 2010

happy queen's birthday.

FINALLY the long weekend is here! golly, i've been looking forward to this for sooooo long! but then just yesterday i realised that its the last long weekend we'll ever have for the rest of the year (i think)! NOOOO wat has this world come to.

but no seriously, i'm so sick of school. we still have 3 more weeks of this torture to get through and then HOLIDAYS!!
argh okay but before i get through these 3 weeks, i'm gonna have to get through that pile of irrelevent homework/assignmenting such as: stupid history source work where we have to practice writing responses like we will for school cert (which NOBODY cares about), science database (although that's finished we still have to do that in class test thing- gay.) and practice essay for poetry.

*sigh* seriously i cant believe that only 2 months have passed by this term. i reckon we bunched up all the exciting stuff in term 1 and so in term 2 everyones like... oh what do we have to look forward to? half yearlies...yay? and then now, we don't have any camps/excursions/long weekends so were like omgsh *die*.

but hmm i was so close to not going to school on thursday, cuz i was like oh golly im sick/lazy/cbb. but then i was like noo cooking, noo other stuff which i forgot.

but trivia night was fun! italian mimes ftw. go momma alice and children. we rock. =] but seriously, we got notable mention, i mean that's gotta be worth SOMETHING =D
oh and we came 12/25 but dude. abusalim. winona's group. we totally owned you. man in your hearts you know we beat you =P

well we would have anyway if we actually listened to alice's answers, like half of which were correct but we didn't write down. hmm, oh well. better luck next year (we'll own you all).

okay so wat i have planned for this weekend: nothing. actually, thats not true, on monday i'm gonna go formal dress shopping with my mum (end of financial year sale =] although i'm not even sure if the shops are open on public holidays) and yeh. hmm holidays i wanna host a sleepover for world cup finals =D

btw who watched the opening ceremony? pretty dodgy quality but i guess...wat do you expect. some of their stuff was awesum tho. like their beetles that they made look like they were real i was so amazed by that! also the thing where the dust came out of that bowl thing (which from birds' eye view looked like the ring from lotr)and also when they made the shape of africa and the rest of the world and then turned the stuff over to represent footsteps. that was awesum.

anyway.

genius #13: cable ties
hmm i think i got this off diwan. these things are pretty cool, and i really like the sound they make. they also feel pretty....satisfying...or is that just me and my weirdness?

k, so how it works is, it has this ratcheting system with a gear rack thats kinda zig-zaggy so you can only slide it one way. if you try to push the other way you will find that it is blocked. but i guess the downside of it is that its REALLY hard to open. and then your like omgsh how do i do this? you get a pair of scissors but because its so thick you cant cut it and then your like omgshhhhh then yeh. but who uses these awesum things for the purpose they were designed for anyway? pshh

wow, some places even use cable ties as "makeshift handcuffs" and one product, plasticuffs, have been made based on the cable tie design, for handcuffing people. although on wiki, there are far more disadvantages of it than advantages.
