*** i'm so sorry, this was in my drafts, i didn't realise i didn't actually publish it!
10/11/2012: Finished drawing this early in the morning like around 12.30am. I wanted it to be so epic; I envisaged pure awesomeness and intensity but alas, I realised that horses are just way too hard to draw.
i seriously think the face looks like a dog's, maybe just because i was staring at it for far too long.
here are all the sketches i did.
first was top left: i drew a king chess piece then different ways of caricaturing it; then i chose the second, second last and last ones as the good ones
bottom left: i then drew what i wanted my king chess piece to look like front on, then tried making it bend. realised that didn't work and it probably needs a side profile. i drew that then thought it was ridiculous and started drawing people bending and kneeling down. i then divided the chess piece into segments so head/shoulders/chest/stomach/legs/feet and aligned it with the person kneeling down then drew my final king sketch.
top right: tried drawing a knight piece, then roughly sketched the legs when a horse is in a rear up position
bottom right: tried roughly sketching the whole horse together. many failed attempts here because horses are so hard to draw. then i tried drawing eyes but that was short-lived too. i decided to just leave it to the actual drawing for me to experiment with horse heads. then i tried seeing how i should write check mate.
then i drew it =]
the whole thing took about 2 hours with distractions like skyping and such.
i envisaged a whole like... low-angled shot so the knight would look like it was TOWERING over the king. but oh well.
